Most men grow up wanting to be a lot of things and not specifically, a father. You may like kids, have a great equation with your partner, but when the stork visits unexpectedly, you may hit the panic button. If you decide to go ahead being a dad, follow these five mantras to stay calm and in control.
1) Accept the confusion
From excitement to ‘you don’t feel it inside’ to fear to downright indifference, you will end up feeling more than your standard range of emotions. Accept it. You are not being singled out, it happens to blokes all the time when their partners are expecting. Sadly, there aren’t many would-be-dad support groups. Consider starting one.

2) Deal with the changes
There will be plenty, especially after bub arrives. From the room you sleep in, changes in your relationship, family camping at home to changes in your schedule, your world may not be the same again. To avoid getting upset with rapid changes, stay involved right from the start and plan what adjustments need to be made.

3) Be around
For the scans, the doctor visits, the midnight treats and the delivery (if you don’t have the stomach to hold her hand through labour, pacing outside like in the movies, will do). Being present throughout your partner’s pregnancy will keep you involved, interested and in control.

4) Manage the finances
Gone are the days, when love and fresh air were enough to bring in babies. Having a child is expensive, and we are not talking about education expenses yet. Medical expenses, hospital bills, utilities, getting your home ready for the new arrival and so forth, costs money. Start saving up when you get the announcement.

5) Have fun
Being a dad is surely a lot of hard work, but it can also be one of the most enjoyable roles of your life, if you learn to relax. Surely, changing diapers and managing baby meltdowns are part of the deal, but so is fun stuff, like telling stories, playing in the sand, being a hero to a little one, reliving your childhood and much more.
