The scandal:
On September 18, 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) slapped an emissions violation notice on Volkswagen (VW), the popular German car-maker. VW had apparently intentionally programmed their vehicle diesel engines to cheat lab emission tests.

Cars were fitted with a rogue software that sensed when they were being tested, activating an equipment that reduced emissions of nitrogen oxide, while emitting about 40 times more in real world driving. The scandal unraveled when researchers at West Virginia University found significantly high emissions during on-road testing.

Desi regulator (Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)) sprung into action and found some of the VW diesel vehicles in India emitting upto 9 times more nitrogen oxide than what they did during emission approval stage. A show-cause notice has been sent to VW India. A massive recall may be on the anvil.
