Dressing for your body type also applies to jackets and most men select jackets by style, quality and longevity without bothering much about their body shapes. It’s not every day that you invest in a good, expensive jacket hoping to wear it for a few years easily, if not exactly a decade. With these tips, you will end up with a jacket that will accentuate your appearance and look perfectly crafted for your body.

Type 1 – Trapezoid or the average build

You are lucky if you are built this way. A trapezoid build means you have a balanced body, with shoulders slightly broader than the midriff, and lean, but not stickly thin legs. It also means you are not overtly athletic with bulky muscles but hit the gym once in a while or go for a run regularly. With a balance between your upper body, waist and legs, you can go for straight line or tapered jackets that highlight the strong points of your shape. Your shape will go well with almost all colours and you can also carry off printed jackets with ease.

Type 2 – Inverted triangle or beefy upper

The shape of the athlete or inverted triangle is one that has a brawny upper body, muscled arms or wide shoulder blades and a shapely waist. Anything which fits like a V (not V neck) is perfect for your shape, however you may not find many jackets with a V fit. The trick here is to go for a slim fit jacket and pick one size larger than you normally wear to get a perfect shape. You can also go for a longish jacket that tapers at the waist and fills out at the hips. Feel free to experiment with colours and prints, but avoid double breasted jackets at all times.

Type 3 – Rectangle, oval or even proportions (3 and 5 in the top image)

You have a rectangle shape when your shoulders and waist are in one straight line, without any indentation or curve. Whether you are a heavy rectangle (with a big waistline) or a slimmer one, avoid making the mistake of buying a fitted jacket. Being shrink wrapped will do little to hide your lack of shape (or curvature). If you have a heavier middle, go for a longish jacket (hip length or a trench coat) and if you are narrowly built, get a jacket with stylish shoulder patches or a quilted one in solid colours.

Type 4 – Triangle or the heavy middle

Your shape can be best described as the triangle, if you have average proportions elsewhere and feature a big waist. The problem you face in picking up a jacket for your shape could be because it fits beautifully elsewhere but looks stuck in the middle, especially zipped up. Try going for a size larger than you usually wear that will hide your large middle and won’t sag at the shoulders either, if you wear a jumper or shirt inside. Black and dark shades will give you a slimmer look and you can avoid prints, stripes, puffer and quilted jackets.
